About this chart

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) consists of eight major components, each representing a different category of consumer spending. Each category is assigned a weight by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) based on its importance to the average consumer's spending habits. This chart shows the stacked weighted contribution of each component to the overall CPI index level (1982–1984 = 100). The weights are approximated using February 2023 BLS weights and are held static, so the stacked total is an approximation of the headline CPI rather than an exact match. Housing (44.45%) dominates as the largest single contributor, followed by Transportation (16.76%) and Food & Beverages (14.34%). The dashed white line shows the actual Headline CPI for reference.
