About this chart
This map shows which US states have seen their Initial Unemployment Insurance Claims rise by more than the selected threshold on a year-over-year (YoY) basis. For each month, weekly initial claims are summed and compared to the same month one year prior. A state is highlighted when its monthly claims total has grown by more than the threshold percentage. A rising number of states experiencing sharp increases in initial claims signals broad deterioration in the labor market and has historically coincided with periods of economic slowdown or recession. Data sourced from the Department of Labor, Employment and Training Administration (DOL/ETA) via FRED. Use the timeline to animate through history.
