Categorical Economic Policy Uncertainty (EPU) indices are newspaper-based measures that track policy uncertainty across multiple policy domains — including monetary policy, fiscal policy (taxes and spending), health care, national security, entitlement programs, regulation, financial regulation, and trade. The indices are constructed by searching newspaper archives for articles containing terms related to uncertainty and specific policy areas. Spikes reflect growing uncertainty around a specific domain; comparing categories reveals which policy areas are driving elevated uncertainty at any given time. Use the Category dropdown to switch between policy domains, and the Overlay to compare against S&P 500 price history.
